Primary
- any dancer 6 years of age or younger

only allowed to compete with pas de
basques, pas de basques & high cuts, Fling and Sword

sometimes divided into Primary A (those
only doing the pas de basques & pas de basques and high cuts) and
Primary B (those also doing the Fling and Sword)

Beginner
- dancer over 6 years of age with less then 6 "wins"
or 6 months of competition time from first "win" received
- usually divided by ages into
groups
- only allowed to compete with
Fling, Sword, Trews, Reel, Lilt and Flora
- will compete most often with the
Fling, Sword, Trews and either the Lilt or Flora

Novice
- dancer with 6-12 "wins"
or 6 months in Beginner
- usually divided by ages into
groups
- only allowed to compete with
Fling, Sword, Trews, Reel, Lilt and Flora
- will compete most often with the
Fling, Sword, Trews and either the Lilt or Flora

Intermediate
- dancer with over 12 "wins"
- only lasts 1 calendar year from time of first Intermediate
competition
- will compete with the highland
dances (including the Reel) and often the Lilt, Flora, Jig, or
Hornpipe
- are also allowed to compete with
the Barracks and Laddie

 |
Premier
- after year in Intermediate
- divided by age
- can compete in championship and choreography competitions
- will compete with all dances
- can qualify for the National and World championships
